Shakeel Badayuni was born on August 3, 1916 in a small town Badayun of present State Uttar Pradesh in India. An alumni of Aligarh Muslim University later, Shakeel learned Hindi, Urdu, Persian and Arabic at an early stage. He earned his name in the society for his romantic poems against the flavour of social injustice prevalent in the society.

Shakeel Badayuni moved to Mumbai (Bombay) and teamed up with Naushad (music composer) to start his career as lyricist in Hindi film “Dard” and never looked back. One after another, they gave so many hit movies and ruled Bollywood Cinema. Some of the movies of Shakeel Badayuni are Deedaar, Baiju Bawara, Mother India, Mughal-e-Azam, Dulari, Shabab, Ganga Jamuna, Mere Mehboob, Chaudhvin ka Chand, Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam, Bees Saal Baad, Gharana, Phool Aur Pathar, Do Badan etc. He won Filmfare Award as best lyricist for song Chaudhvin ka Chand ho…. in 1961 followed by in 1962 for Husnwale Tera Jawab Nahi…. (Gharana) and in 1963 for Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil….(Bees Saal Baad).

Shakeel Badayuni died on April 20, 1970 succumbing to complications due to diabetes. Government of India honoured Shakeel Badayuni with the title of Geetkar-e-Azam. A postage stamp was released with his face on May 3, 2013 by India Post.

 

Shakeel Badayuni wrote ghazals as well which were rendered by singer Begum Akhtar. One such ghazal is:

मेरे हमनफ़स, मेरे हमनवा, मुझे दोस्त बन के दग़ा न दे
मैं हूँ दर्द-ए-इश्क़ से जाँ-ब-लब1, मुझे ज़िंदगी की दुआ न दे

मेरे दाग़-ए-दिल से है रौशनी, इसी रौशनी से है ज़िंदगी
मुझे डर है ऐ मेरे चाराग़र2 , ये चराग़ तू ही बुझा न दे

मुझे छोड़ दे मेरे हाल पर, तेरा क्या भरोसा है चाराग़र
ये तेरी नवाज़िश-ए-मुक़्तसर3 , मेरा दर्द और बढ़ा न दे

मेरा अज़्म4 इतना बुलन्द है के पराये शोलों का डर नहीं
मुझे ख़ौफ़ आतिश-ए-गुल5 से है, ये कहीं चमन को जला न दे

वो उठे हैं लेके खुम-ओ-सुबू6 , अरे ओ ‘शक़ील’ कहाँ है तू
तेरा जाम लेने को बज़्म में कोइ और हाथ बढ़ा न दे

1. मरणासन्न, nearing death 2. हकीम, Doctor 3. थोड़ा सा ध्यान देना, Little Care 4. इरादा, determination 5. कलियों के चटकने से निकलने वाली चिंगारी (अतिशयोक्ति अलंकार), fire generated with the plucking of flower buds 6. लम्बी सुराहीदार गर्दन वाला नीचे से घड़े के आकार वाला अरबी/ फ़ारसी पारम्परिक बर्तन) जो मयखाने में शराब डालने के लिए प्रयुक्त होता था, utensil with long neck used to pour liquor in clubs.
