Chhalaang (2020) movie review

After winning National Film Award for best direction for SHAHID in 2013 and after doing films like Aligarh in 2016 and Simran in 2017 and also directing Scam 1992, a web series, Harshal Mehta has clinched a niche for himself in bollywood as a well establish director. Chhalaang is another feather in his cap. His wife Safeena Hussain is collecting accolades for her social work in the field of education to girls through her NGO Educate Girls. Her impact is seen in the movie as well where great opportunities are also given to girls and they are motivated to come out of their closets to showcase their talent.
The film is written by Zeishan Quadri of Gangs of Wasaypur fame, alongwith Luv Ranjan and Aseem Arrora. Though the story is predictable, yet the film generates interest as to how it will be done!

The film Chhalaang is produced jointly by Ajay Devgn, Luv Ranjan & Ankur Garg, producer of Sonu ke titu ki sweety and Bhushan Kumar of T-Series. The film has to be released on OTT platform at Prime Video on 13 November 2020 due to pandemic COVID-19.
The music by Hitesh Sonik, Guru Randhawa, Yo Yo Honey Singh and Vishal–Shekhar is just ok. Except “Care ni karda” by Yo Yo Honey Singh, all songs are flat. This song is also added in the last after the completion of the movie. But otherwise also there seemed to be no scope for songs. Cinematography by Eeshit Narain is good. Editing by Chetan Solanki and Akib Ali is also good.

The acting of Rajkumar Rao as Mahender/ Montu is very nice. His love interest Nushrat Bharucha as Neelima looks charming. Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub as IM Singh had nothing much to do. All other actors are upto their mark.
Some of the sequences are very hilarious which is actually required during COVID-19 times. The actors have done their job to keep the audience with the film with their good acting in a predictable sequence. The involvement of a female teacher going out for drinking with colleagues opens a new chapter. Women empowerment is spreading its wings and reached a small town of Haryana.

One positive (there are other positive things than being corona positive) take away is that challenges motivates you to reach to your potential. It reaffirms the quote by Swami Vivekananda that “mind knows the limitations set by you”. This film is far better than Akshay Kumar starrer “Laxmi” which bombed. Chhalaang is a one time watch with family.
