Dil Bechara (2020) : Film Review

Dil Bechara is the last film of bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput who died on 14 June 2020 at the age of 34 years. Dil Bechara is based on the novel of American author John Michael Green “The fault in our stars” which was on number one of the best seller list of New York Times in 2012. His book also won “Teen book of the year” award in 2013.

The film is directed by Mukesh Chhabra making a debut with director’s hat after being in the film industry as casting director for last 10 years. He is able to present the emotions in bits of scenes beautifully making them memorable and involving audience to connect with the characters. He has a long way to go.

The film had its issues with Mukesh Chhabra who was accused of sexual harassment and which resulted in post production delays. Mukesh Chhabra was later acquitted of all charges and paved the way for its release. But the film couldn’t be released earlier due to COVID-19 pandemic and finally released for free on Hotstar on 24 July 2020. Meanwhile, Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide made his last movie as a tribute to him by the makers. It’s trailer set up a record of 10 million views on YouTube breaking all previous records ever by any movie.

Coming to the performance, Sushant Singh Rajput as Manny and debutant Sanjana Sanghi as Kizie Basu shine with their sizzling performances. It was a young romance between two people lying on the verge of death. The performances by all other actors is also good.
Technically speaking, the cinematography by Satyajit Pande is excellent. The background score by AR Rahman is good. The editing by Aarif Sheikh could have been better. The film is produced by Fox Star Studios with a budget of INR 25 crores.

Overall, Dil Bechara is an emotional drama with light romance. A must for fans of Sushant Singh Rajput and a one time watch for others.
